Amazing Race

WHS students completed the Amazing Race 12 challenge. The Amazing Race challenge started twelve years ago. As an activity after AP testing, WHS AP Human Geography students raced for first place by going through mental and physical challenges in an Amazing Race loosely based on the material they spent all year learning.

Some physical class challenges in past years included a Tour de France challenge, egg races, and building a house out of popsicle sticks. Mental games included

  • identifying a language,
  • matching crops to a region,
  • learning the "Haka" dance and other content-related obstacles.

The entire class was comprised of random groups, and each group made challenges with two team members taking turns participating in events. The rest of the members organized an event all teams had to join. Some of the ideas for challenges came from the actual show.

The Amazing Race project was inspired by the CBS TV program of the same name, where competitors go around the world hoping to secure the prize of one million dollars cash. However, the tensions for the in-class version are just as high. While they are not playing for money, each winning team member receives a gift card from a local restaurant. This year the gift cards came from Culver's restaurant.

Mr. Greg Stewart, the AP Human Geography teacher, and his students enjoyed doing this project at the end of the year. As per tradition, a group picture was taken by Mr. Stewart of all the students who participated in the race.
