Grandpa and Grandma Whippet

On Friday night, September 22, Grandma and Grandpa Whippet were recognized at the Homecoming Football game. Grandma and Grandpa Whippet are chosen each year by Student Council based on the support given to the WHS students in the areas of academics, arts, and athletics. Grandma and Grandpa Whippet for Homecoming 2023 are Barb Sheffield and Gary Hookstead.

Barb taught Phy Ed and Health for 44 years at the middle school. Besides teaching, she was also a coach. She coached high school volleyball for 4 years and started the high school’s gymnastics program. Barb coached the gymnastics team for 38 years! Even though she has retired, she has been staying active in the Whitewater School District community. She has helped coach the gymnastics team and subs at the middle school. She also has time to travel, sing in her church’s choir, and spend a lot of time with family and friends. And, she is Triple A proud. You can find her at other athletic, arts, and academic events. Barb is appreciated throughout the Whitewater Community. She exemplifies the #TheWhippetWay.

Gary Hookstead is a lifelong Whippet. He was a 1977 graduate of WHS and was also a member of the Whippet Football team. After graduation, Gary decided to stay in Whitewater and was a Whitewater Unified School District employee for over 25 years, spending all of his years at Whitewater High School. Not only did he graduate from WHS, but he raised five kids, with his wife Pam, and they all are WHS graduates. After his retirement in June, he has been enjoying his time on the family farm. Gary is also a huge supporter of the academics, arts, and athletics of the Whitewater Community. He, too, is Triple A Proud!

Congratulations Barb and Gary for your support and commitment to the WUSD Community!
