New Partnership Grants Students Free Access to Public Library Resources

WHITEWATER, WI — Over 1,000 students in the Whitewater Unified School District received public library cards this fall through a new partnership expanding access to books and educational resources.

The collaboration between WUSD and the Whitewater Public Library began this past spring. During online registration in May, parents had the option to check a box to request a library card for their student.

ā€œWe’re thrilled to expand learning beyond the classroom walls,ā€ said District Library Media Specialist Kathy Retzke. ā€œThis partnership gives every student, regardless of background, year-round access to the knowledge and resources they need to succeed.ā€

Whitewater Public Library staff have been preparing and mailing the first wave of cards this month. Students can use their cards at any library in the Bridges Library System. The partnership also unlocks access to the public library’s digital collection, including e-books, audiobooks, and online educational tools.

The Whitewater Public Library is undergoing a remodel to expand spaces and services. The library also offers year-round, literacy-focused programs that support reading, writing, and lifelong learning for all age groups.

ā€œBy working together, we are opening doors to additional educational resources for every child in our community,ā€ said WUSD Superintendent Samuel Karns. ā€œThis is an example of how local partnerships can have a meaningful impact on student achievement and family engagement, contributing to our All Means All mission.ā€

The district and library plan to make this initiative a permanent part of the district registration process.
