WUSD Calendar Committee Approves 10-Minute Extension to School Day Beginning in 2026-27
WHITEWATER, WI — The Whitewater Unified School District calendar committee has approved a 10-minute extension to the school day beginning in the 2026-27 school year.
The additional time will be added to the end of the school day and will go toward supporting academic intervention at the elementary level. Because the added time counts toward instructional minutes, the 10 minutes must be used for academic purposes and cannot be used for recess, lunch, or other non-instructional activities.
“This adjustment allows us to be intentional about providing focused intervention time for our elementary students,” said Superintendent Samuel Karns. “By adding a small amount of time to the end of each day, we can better support student learning.”
Wisconsin school calendars are based on the total number of instructional time students receive each day. By increasing the number of minutes in the school day, the district will be able to meet required instructional time earlier in the year.
As a result, the 2026-27 school year will begin on September 1st and conclude earlier than usual, with the last day of school scheduled for the Friday before Memorial Day.
The Calendar Committee approved the change at its April 16 meeting. Additional details about the 2026-27 school calendar will be shared with families and staff as planning continues.
